Acid stained concrete can be a low-cost option to have a beautiful floor. Acid staining concrete transforms your dull gray concrete into a colorful floor with a look like marble. Our acid staining service can create custom designs as well. You can combine this with our concrete epoxy coating for a brilliant, beautiful decorative floor.
Acid staining uses hydrochloric acid and acid-soluble metallic salts mixed to cause a reaction with the concrete that results in a color change. Different mixtures result in different colors. The results can mimic everything from polished marble to tanned leather and even Natural Stone or wood. This alternative to carpet or hardwood is affordable and is hypoallergenic. While carpets trap allergens and dirt and can be hard to clean properly, acid stained concrete is easy to sweep and mop.
For most remodel projects, we recommend installing an overlay first. After most carpet installation, the tack strips or tile, linoleum floors are removed; there is typically damage to the concrete subfloor. In the case of some tiles, ghosting of the grout lines can appear, and they are permanent. The carpet tack strip creates pockmarks on the edges of the concrete in the rooms that can be filled, but they won't blend very well. Linoleum and carpet glue can penetrate deep into the concrete and may only appear after the concrete has been stained. So for the sake of quality on a remodel where there has been an existing floor, we highly recommend putting down an overlay first.
Stains for concrete come in two general categories; acid-based chemical stains and water-based acrylics. Both of these stains can be applied to brand new or old concrete. The acid stains work exceptionally well to revitalize dull lackluster surfaces. These stains penetrate the concrete surfaced, which gives them excellent UV stability and wear resistance permitting their application on the interior or exterior concrete surfaces.
